After reading box 1 in Fieldworking, I have been able to identify the different subculture groups that I fall into. I am a Puerto Rican New Yorker who is also an Atheist. I am a Puerto Rican simply for the fact that my family comes from all different parts of the island Puerto Rico. We have many different rituals and behaviors that we follow because of our culture. Pasteles, which are similar to tamales are known as the staple meal of a traditional Puerto Rican Christmas. Although it is unknown as to why they are always made during Christmas, no true Puerto Rican strays from this tradition. Even though being Puerto Rican is a huge part of my life, the area in which I reside has made me a lot into who I am today. I am a New Yorker because I was born and raised in the Bronx which is a borough of New York. In the Bronx we are very rude and always confrontational for some reason which is basically the way I am, I’m literally always mad and ready for a fight if someone comes at me and that might not be a good approach but I do carry myself accordingly in the streets and at school. Coming from New York, I see a lot of religions being practiced and given the fact that Puerto Ricans are mostly Catholic you would think I practice, but that isn’t the case. I’m actually an atheist yet I’m not because it’s hard to explain what I mean. I believe in a Heaven and Hell but I’m not sure if God created us all, that’s where I fail to believe in that kind of thing but I do not go against others beliefs because I believe in freedom of speech and freedom to believe what you want.
I believe I fall into all of these subcultures because of my family which I think is quite obvious. I didn’t have to fall into these subcultures but I love them all and I feel that each one is unique. I’m Puerto Rican to the core from just the way I carry myself and the way I speak Spanish. Even the way I love food from my culture shows just how Puerto Rican I am and I love that about myself. I am also a New Yorker to my core and you can see it from my attitude and the way my pace fastens when I’m outside walking. When you are born in New York, you learn the subway and how to adjust to the ‘city that never sleeps” but the amazing thing is how we get used to New York behavior. Everywhere I have traveled to outside of New York always comments on my accent and attitude and I love hearing it because these are things I didn’t even notice. Being in a subculture is actually amazing because when you analyze yourself, you see just how special you are.
